Arch-Inquisitor Melchizedek's Office
The hiss of steam escaping from countless valves and pipes joins with the crackle of erratic artificial lighting, in this cylindrical vault that serves as the office – and interrogation chamber – of the Arch-Inquisitor Melchizedek. The center of the chamber is dominated by a column-like bundle of pipes, cables and supports that run upward, bound together by a railed walkway about halfway up. Tattered banners of the Temple hang from the walls, amidst cracked panels and exposed machinery, and circling the column can be seen a few stations and tables – wicked-looking machines that might be for controlling ancient instruments … or for extracting answers out of uncooperative "guests". The dim and unreliable light is supplemented by torch stands in alcoves ringing the room, and a solid-looking pair of reinforced doors provide the only visible exit.

The door to the Arch-Inquisitor's office cycles open. The black unicorn looks up from a table with several papers on it, and regards the poodle and the Guard visible through the doorway. "Greetings, Lady Elise Antoine de Bellefeuille. Please do come in, and be seated if you wish."

Elise immediately snaps to attention and meets the Arch Inquisitor with a Star and Anchor salute. "Arch Inquisitor Majoris Melchizedek, Sir," she greets him. Hesitantly, she makes her way forward, and despite trying to look ahead, she occasionally glances at interesting bits here and there. After examining a few chairs on her way, including those meant for uncooperative guests, she seats herself in front of the Arch Inquisitor.

The door cycles shut, leaving the poodle alone with the unicorn.

The unicorn looks toward Elise. "How may I help you, Madame?"

The woman reaches under her arm to where a small book had been previously hidden by her cloak and opens this across her lap. "Arch Inquisitor Majoris, I have come to report what I overheard in Sylvania at the Kurai Castle during Harvest Tide. Gallis has again begun to pressure Sylvania, but this time by attempting to buy out one of its leaders to their side." She glances down at the book once, then up again.

The unicorn just nods silently.

The poodle repeats the unicorn's nod a second after he makes it. "Yes, right. Anyway… " She glances down at the book again and studies it a moment before looking up for the second time. "During the feast, a Gallee poodle by the name of Menteur entered uninvited, saying he had something to offer Lord Kurai. The Czar, seemingly rather worried by this, stood up and shortly offered Lord Kurai the title of Count. The Gallisian scoffed at this and then offered Lord Kurai the title of Marquis of Blackshire if he would join the Gallisian side. Lord Kurai refused, prompting Menteur to mention that he 'would rather have Lord Kurai as an ally, and not an enemy.' A threat, I believe. Lord Kurai continued to turn down the offer and at last accepted the Czar's offer. This caused the poodle to leave in quite a huff."

The unicorn nods. "Not surprising."

The woman flips a page in her book. "Exile Envoy practices magic… Wynona held for crimes against Rephidim… excessive amounts of Savanites… Duchess Kurai's train system… " She flips a few more pages and pauses. "Ah, here we are. Count Kurai. I thought the Temple might find a character review of him useful. Would this be correct?"

The unicorn says, "You are welcome to present it."

"As you wish, sir," says the poodle. Her head dips again as she skims the page before she looks up and offers the review. "Count Kurai is an unrefined noble, from what I saw. I witnessed him not only insult me by using speciesist remarks, but he seems to lack any noble refinements. However, he does exhibit loyalty to his people as well as the Czar. After dinner I spoke with him about seeking to learn the ways of nobility and he was rather uninterested, stating he would not want his country ruled as the nobles here run Rephidim. He also mentioned he would likely run things in the manner of… Savanites… of all people, and displayed that the Star is his religion. He showed to be a stubborn individual set in his ways. To his credit, he did apologize to me and mentioned I was welcome in his area any time. In review, I believe him to be stubborn and unrefined in the ways of rulership and nobility, but loyal and of a good heart. He does seem to dislike Rephidim somewhat, however."

Elise adds, "Pardon me, if I do ramble on. I did not wish to miss anything."

The unicorn nods. "At present, the Temple has little say in how Sylvania governs its affairs, and how its chooses its rulers. If young Master Kurai has become a Count of Sylvania, that would imply a transfer of his citizenship to Sylvania. He was, you see, born a citizen of Rephidim. His parents are merchants."

"I was unaware that he had even been a citizen," she says, frowning somewhat. "I find it slightly upsetting he could speak so of the Temple, having lived here. Rather ungrateful, I say. But I doubt you have time to hear my opinions in this, and I see no reason to use up your time further, sir. Do you need anything else of me?"

The unicorn shakes his head. "No. The Temple appreciates your diligence, Lady Bellefeuille."

Elise glances at her book once more before looking back for a final time. "I also wish to state that Menteur referred to Count Vlad as a 'creature of darkness'." She then stands and salutes the Arch Inquisitor. "I thank you for your time, sir."

The Arch-Inquisitor bows to Elise. "A good day to you, Cadet." He pulls on a chain. The door cycles open.

The woman returns the bow, being unable to curtsey very well in her uniform. "I will not be a cadet much longer, Arch Inquisitor Majoris. I will graduate soon from the academy. I look forward to serving you and all members of the Temple."

The unicorn nods, and returns to his work. The door remains open.

Having said what she needed to say, Elise turns and walks out the door – this time without examining the structure along the way.
