Josef, a cougar Khatta working with the Savanite Underground in Abu Dhabi, goes to a run-down place known as the Purple Rose Hotel, on a tip that a slave by the name of Djinn is in mortal danger for having witnessed a murder. When he arrives, however, he finds that it is a trap – for Djinn has participated in a setup meant to snare a member of the Underground, so that Inspector Hastur can interrogate him for information on his contacts.

Josef gives flight, but is cornered in an old cloak room. He blinds a Rokuga attacker with some dusty old cloaks, and the Rokuga's fury results in a hole broken in one of the wooden walls. Josef works the opening a bit further, and finds a new means of escape … fleeing across the street to a curio shop. There, he meets Punja, who offers to hide Josef … in exchange for an unspecified favor that Josef would be owing the old Khatta. Josef agrees with a "Gehnoh", and hides in what turns out to be … a coffin!

Josef finds himself deposited in an alleyway … the same alley, but minus the curio store! The hotel is still across the street, but with no sign of his pursuers. He leaves, with more than a little uneasy feeling in the back of his mind about the agreement he made with Punja.
