Elise's attempts to find her sister come to naught, until she receives a mysterious note tied to a brick, insisting that she deliver a ransom to the Old City Cemetery. Elise meets with Inquisitor Faith, and asks her some questions, not telling her about the note. Some of the answers seem to justify Elise's increasing suspicion that the father of her sister's fiance, the elder de Ayde, may be somehow involved in this, as the amount demanded for ransom closely corresponds to an enormous gambling debt he has at a local gentlemen's club.
