Roho returns to the Freedom's Dream, and informs Zoltan of his adventures, while his bat companion, Markov, is somewhat less coherent in his reports, lapsing into unconsciousness. Zoltan sets out for the tower, eager to find a way to find this Vartan that rescued Roho, and is soon joined by the fennec. Together, they go up the tower from the spot the other flier lifted off, and make it up … though being temporarily blinded in the process. (This, of course, has no effect on Roho… ) Once within the tower, Zoltan discovers that it is populated by fliers who act and talk like Vartans, but look more like Solus: winged cats. He at last is led into the chamber of the Navigator a white gryphon and learns more of the history of Shokar's legacy by means of the original Navigator's log … and a machine much like the language-teaching devices in the Temple. Using it comes at some price, however, as Zoltan starts seeing things which aren't really there, and questions his own sanity
