Alptraum, off on the west side of Mount Sunala, gets a visit from Autumn-Storm, who brings him up to speed on what she's been doing in Babel. Namely, she's involved with the "Savanite Underground," and has a job Alptraum might be able to help with: a heist on the Tower of Babel! Alptraum is interested, and arranges to meet with a friend of Autumn-Storm's at a Blakatball game the next day.
Alptraum pays a visit to Zana, but while he's there, an old Eeee is carted in, in preparation to be euthanized. Alptraum is horrified by this, but backs down from actively trying to stop it, realizing that he's out of his league. (He's still not happy, though.) He finds that if he's got some sort of "miracle power" to keep people from dying, it doesn't seem to work right now, when he really wants it to.
While seeking to cool down, Alptraum heads out, runs into Yodhgorphat Phlagaea, and they head to the Streets Below, where the Yodhgorphat shows Alptraum an ancient shrine to the full pantheon of Babelite deities (including quite a few "forbidden" deities). Alptraum sees a statue of Rinala, and tries to figure out whether maybe there's something significant about his silver eyes in comparison to this "forbidden" goddess. Phlagaea points out that Rinala is shown with black hair, whereas Alptraum has white, so it doesn't quite work out perfectly.
