Specifically, Zahnrad looks for an ancestor with the initials C.K. What he finds is not entirely what he expected. He discovers a woman who had a series of ups and downs in her life. Her unfortunate acquaintance, and rape at the hands of Abner, to the birth and eventual lose of her son and then grandson. Life hasn't been fair to the Kettenrad clan, but then it is rarely fair to anyone.
