Skye and Lakshmi are invited to the home of Secretary General Narcissa, a sea serpent who has several stuffed former pets perched about his den, and a few inches of water on his floor. He offers Skye and Lakshmi a job – to fetch an elusive and nigh-mythical critter known as a 'whispa'.

Skye and Lakshmi agree, then gather some supplies for their expedition, and set off into the Bromthen flood-plain on some rented amphibious serendips. One of the serendips nips at Skye's tail, but he soon shows his mount who is the master. During the quiet ride, Skye and Lakshmi have a chance to chat, and then they find an island to set up camp on for the night.
