Elise writes a couple of letters – one declining the chance to test for a position of knighthood in the new Orders, and another accepting a position as a junior Executor (Executor Secundus) in the Inquisition. She meets with Arch-Inquisitor Gaelan an Tsagairt, and finds that her immediate superior – Executor Majoris Kaalaas, a Kavi – is strongly disdainful of the idea that Elise would even get this position. Nonetheless, Gaelan commands Kaalaas to take Elise on her first training mission as an Executor Secundus, and to show her the ropes. They start by visiting Investigator Faith (recently demoted from the position of Inquisitor) and getting a briefing on the situation. They then debark on Alida's Folly in search of an escaped former Temple Ranger now wanted for murder and kidnapping.
