Envoy meets up with the Yodhblakat to be "abducted" for Blakatball practice, but an assassin's bolt strikes Madrai (one of the bats), and another (Tievas) attempts to attack Envoy with a knife, but strikes Undara instead. Envoy, unable to fly but still able to glide, dives off the edge of the platform and into the maze of towers, bridges and supports below, trying to evade her attackers. She dives into the dark Undercity, and collides with a buttress, then lands roughly in a pile of filth. After painfully relocating her shoulder, Envoy walks about in the dimness, and meets a bat, "Begheta", who offers help. Envoy soon figures out that this is an ambush, and uses her high-pitched scream to catch the bat off guard and escape into a building, then she sets up a makeshift barricade. Once inside, she narrowly avoids a trap, then finds a sleeping bat. She wakes the bat, only to find out that it's a vampire Eeee, who attacks Envoy, stabbing her in the arm. Envoy flees, only to find that her previous pursuers have gotten past the barricade, whereupon she uses the poison darts from the sprung trap, and stabs the vampire bat. The other bats, seeing the vampire bat's fate, flee, but Envoy falls unconscious.
When Envoy awakens, she finds she is strapped to an altar in a temple of Diphath, a lesser Babelite goddess. She fast-talks her way out of the predicament, persuading the deranged cultists that she is sent from the goddesses to help them attack their enemies. When at last she works them up into a frenzy and sends them off to the Tower of Babel, she finds an exit, gets some candles, and starts climbing a stairway leading back to the upper levels.
