Envoy finds herself in Sunala's realm of death, though minus the Sea of Souls. At last, the "Sea" rolls in, and she sees several representations of people she knew in life, though she supposes they are really just memories, not actual spirits. She refuses to give into the admonitions of the spirits to join them, and instead flies upward, exerting herself, until she breaks the cloud layer, and finds herself back at the Crossroads.

To Envoy's shock and dismay, the archway of Inala is still intact, and the only change is that the statue of Envoy has been replaced with a statue of Inala. Disheartened, she finds her way back to Morpheus' prison. She laments that she has done him no good, and puts her head against the giant's chest. She senses that the giant statue is actually breathing, as strange as it may seem, and she tries to find a way to communicate with Morpheus, touching her horn to a section of exposed crystal.

Envoy's surroundings shift, so that she is no longer in a great chamber, dwarfed by statues, but rather next to a normal-sized Morpheus, surrounded by statues of similar scale. Envoy finds that Morpheus can speak to her, though it pains him to do so. He gives her what advice he can on dealing with the Dream Realm, and apologizes for contributing to the state that she's presently in. He tries to help her figure out where the ritual of the Royal Babelite Mages might be taking place, and also to return to the waking world.

Envoy wakes up, finding herself chained to a column in a Temple of Inala, and lacking proper motor control of her own body.
