Elise engages in a sparring match with Cadet Tannin at fencing practice, easily defeating him. She then squares off against upperclassman Cadet Seline von Shanar, the malamute girl she saw previously at the greenhouse. Seline quickly defeats Elise in their first exchange, but Elise turns the tables with a feinting maneuver when they try again. Class is dismissed, and the cadets head for the locker rooms. However, before Elise gets there, she notices the cadet council president, a Doberman by the name of Jiraud do Nell, berating a younger collie student. Elise is angered by his abusive demeanor, and demands that he stop. When he is not impressed, she challenges him to a duel, knowing from their previous encounter that he cannot refuse. He mocks her, but accepts the duel, stating that he will let her know the place and time later.
