Jynx and the foppish fox travel to Blackshire Village to find out more about some items discovered in the castle laboratory. On the way, they find a few shrines set out for Midsummer's Day – a holiday meant for remembrance of the dead. They also find some killer "bunnies", who chase the two heroes into the village.

They seek shelter in the Blackshire Inn, but Jynx hears the sounds of a dromodon calf out there with the monsters … and a child rushing out to try to save her pet. Jynx dashes back out, and is wounded as he dispatches several of the monsters. Nonetheless, he rescues the little Rhian girl and her pet, retreating to the safety of the inn.

Once the danger has passed, Jynx is introduced to Undertaker Grene, of Tempest County – a subject of the same Count Vlad that Jynx has a grudge against. Jynx learns a little more of Vlad, though it contradicts what he learned from Schoolmaster Bookman earlier. This does nothing, however, to change Jynx's plans to "pound in the face" of the count.
