Zoltan and Qing are among guests at a dinner at the estate of Arch-Inquisitor do Varr, along with some actors and actresses in the employ of young (and spoiled) Eustace do Varr. Arch-Inquisitor "Brother Azrael" is present as well, with his new assistant, Envoy. Zoltan gets to know Jazmine, a vixen, suspecting her of having a connection with Amaranth. Qing utilizes his magic to try to discern more, and soon suspects that some sort of spirit magic is indeed having a hold on Jazmine who is to be the lead actress in Eustace's new play.
Eustace's play is a blatant rip-off of recent events with Francisco and Amaranth, much to the disgust of Zoltan and Qing. Eustace apparently hopes to make a "statement" against foxes in general … all the more ironic, perhaps, since he actually has foxes acting in his production.
At last, Zoltan and Qing make their exit, accompanying Jazmine back to her apartment (and fearing danger from Amaranth), while Brother Azrael takes Envoy back to the Temple.
