Elise tells her tale to Lord Pink, and relates her displeasure with the current state of things. Lord Pink, with Elise's permission gives her his advice: in short, to stop feeling for herself, and, if she is to do good deeds for the First Ones, then to do them for the First Ones, and not for the approval of those who do not matter, to those who by Elise's own testament will forget mortal heroes in due time. Elise, chastised, admits that she has lost her faith in the First Ones. Lord Pink advises her to find it again. And with that, Elise leaves Lord Pink, with many things to brood upon.
Upon arriving back to the de Bellefeuille estate, Elise happens upon her sister, Katherine, being given another sort of "advice" from a couple of visiting gossipers of the nobility who have "concerns" about Miss Krodos (whom they misname "Kronos"), the Eeee woman who is staying as a guest of the de Bellefeuilles. Katherine has none of this, and sends them out, much to their shock and dismay but to Elise's pride. But when Elise comments lightly on the state of affairs, she only sends Katherine into tears … and Elise quickly regrets her words.
