Jan 16: Roho treats several patients for various illnesses

Freedom Park
This park lies within the less used parts of the Crafters' Quarters in the city proper – as a walk goes, it's a considerable way from the College Esoterica in the Scholars' Quarter, but it's much easier to find. Within its cozy spaces trees shade people as they walk its maze-like paths. The only pond or indeed, any kind of body of water to be found within is the crickhen pond, where a few passing Kavis and Skeeks stop to give crusts of bread to the small birds with rainbow-colored bat-wings that float serenely on its surface. Statuary sprout up here and there, including a representation of the First Ship believed to have brought the first people to Sinai, and various monuments to once-prominent persons, now long-forgotten, their features (and the inscriptions on the bases) worn smooth.

Adjoining the Park is a newly constructed building that houses the practice of a fennec doctor who already has won the appreciation of his neighbors…

Roho is standing outside the building, relaxing. He's not inside the building; that's where the painters are, and he found the paint odor rather objectionable. But he has been reassured that the interior will look much more inviting.

A flutter of large wings reaches the Zerda's ears moments before he feels something pass overhead. An Eeee by the sound of it, she flutters about for a few minutes before landing clumsily nearby. "Ow! Wires, that hurt. Hmf."

Roho stirs at the voice, "Hello? Can I help you ma'am?"

"Owww," a high-pitched voice squeaks. "I hope so." Wings flutter as the Eee draws a bit closer, hopping on one foot. "I twisted my ankle earlier to – Ugh. Today. It hasn't gotten any better."

Roho nods, "Well, umm… I'd say you've come to the right place, but they're decorating the inside again. I wish they'd stop doing that. I think there's a rock over there, would you take a seat on that?"

"Okay." Bree squeaks as she settles down on the rock, furling her wings loosely behind her. Her right foot does seem to have suffered some sort of misfortune, her ankle more than a little swollen. Her wings looked a little scuffed here and there as well, and there's a tiny cut on one ear, near the tip. Maybe she did tangle with some wires after all.

Roho sits at the bat's feet, and after discovering which ankle it is, gently lifts the foot. "How'd you do this, anyways? And let me know if anything hurts… " He gently turns the foot slightly.

"Ow!" Bree makes a face, drawing her foot back a bit. "I slipped on some wet shingles." She bites her lower lip, glancing at the physician.

Roho stops moving the foot at the call, and feels along the ankle with his fingers, "Well, you twisted it up pretty good. I guess I don't need to tell you that walking on top of buildings is risky… "

Brishen winces, a thin smile working across her muzzle, "Couriers don't have much of a choice, sometimes." Her ankle is, indeed, quite swollen.

The flutter of bat wings heralds another incoming Eeee. The dark-furred bat touches down lightly on the grass, then allows his wings to fold back as he adjusts a feathered cap and a patterned shawl. That finished, be begins to walk toward Brishen and Roho.

Roho nods, "I'd guess not. Well, for now, I'm going to splint this up, and give you some medicine to help with the swelling. I'm guessing you can't take off a couple of days' work?"

Brishen brushes a lock of hair from her eyes, glancing at her leg. "It'd be really hard."

Roho nods, "Okay, I understand. If you can't keep the foot rested, then at least try to keep your weight off it most of the time for the next week. I'll be back in a moment… " He disappears into the hospital, coming out a moment later with a splint and some pills. He addresses the other bat, "I'll be with you in a moment, sir."

The other bat just nods. He must be new here.

The little courier squeaks to herself, wincing as she tries to bend her ankle. Her foot stays where it is, for the most part, though her toes wiggle a little. "It wasn't much of a fall, really. I guess I just bruise easily." She glances at the other bat.

Roho starts wrapping the foot, after splinting the ankle, "Leave the wrapping on for a week, and try to keep it dry. Take two of the pills this evening, and then two a day for the next three days, one in the morning and one at night." He cinches the bandage, "After that, take one pill every night for another three days."

Brishen tucks the pills away in her satchel, nodding, and tries not to squeak as her foot is bandaged. "I – Erk. Ow! Um. How much do I owe you?"

Roho straightens up as he finishes with the foot, "That depends. If you can afford it, the treatment and pills are ten shekels. If you can't do that, then pay what you can. I try to break even, but I don't deny anyone treatment."

Brishen sighs, almost too quietly for the Zerda to hear, then squeaks, "I can afford it." Shekels clatter against one another as she fishes through a small pouch, deep within her satchel: After a few moments a tenner is pressed into the physician's hand.

Roho nods, "Thank you. If you need the wrapping replaced, or you can't walk on it within a week, come back."

Arcadia lumbers down the street, pausing wide eyed for but a moment to stifle a… sneeze. "ah ah ahh whew!" She smiles and heads towards the clinic.

The courier winces, wrinkling her nose, then stands. Immediately, she stifles a pained squeak. "Ow." A glance down at the offending foot, then, "I'm glad I won't be walking much today."

The other bat, meanwhile, clears his throat, coughing into his fist.

Roho smiles, "I don't have a cane or anything to offer you, but if you can find one, it might really help." He turns to the second bat, "I'm sorry, can I help you?"

Brishen giggles quietly, tilting her head a little as she brushes a lock of hair from her eyes. "I wouldn't want to carry one around though. Especially since I spend most of the day in the air."

The dark bat walks up to Roho and says, "I understand that you prescribed a certain poultice for the Sabaoth of Babel some time ago before your departure from Ashdod. I would like to obtain a quantity of this poultice made to the same specifications. I am prepared to pay you well for your time and effort."

Arcadia sniffles loudly as she tromps a few feet away from the clinic… her huge tail trailing behind her making a S like line in the sand

(The Sabaoth?) Brishen makes a show of tucking her hair under her beret while she casts a curious glance at the dark Eeee.

The Eeee has a fairly blank look on his face as he regards Roho and ignores Brishen.

Brishen blinks a few times, then blinks again as she's distracted by the large dragon. "Eek? Oh, hello!"

Roho blinks in surprise, slightly taken aback at the mention of a rather unpleasant bit of his history, "Well… I never gave him a poultice. I prepared an oral remedy."

The dark Eeee nods. "Very well then. Whatever it was you prepared for him. Name your price."

Roho pauses a moment, "Is the Sabaoth still unwell, then?"

Arcadia coughs a little "Hi there… um… I was told theres a cliic dow this ay You see… " she sniffles a bit more sounding rather clogged up, " Ive ot a cold. "

The dark Eeee frowns. "I am not anyone who would know anything about the Sabaoth's health. I have simply heard about this wondrous remedy and would like to purchase a large sample. Surely you can use the money."

Roho nods, "I certainly can. But I'm not in the habit of just giving out my prescriptions like candy. And besides, it is no wonder remedy, it only cures a certain few symptoms. A combination which I have only seen once before, in the Sabaoth."

Bree bites her lower lip, her interests torn between Arcadia and the dark bat. "Oh – that's awful!" She takes a few steps back, albeit polite ones. The last thing she needs is getting a cold on top of a twisted ankle.

Arcadia holds up her drooping ears … upon hearing about wondrous remedies… "Pardon but are you the healer? You can cure things wondrously?? I'd be most grateful if you'd help me… ahhh ahhhh… " she tries not to sneeze… a good bit of black smoke streams out of her nose.

"Whatever," the dark Eeee says with a wave of the hand. "Assume you were preparing the potion for someone with exactly the same symptoms and conditions."

Roho nods, "Then I could do it. Would you come aside for a moment, please?" He addresses Arcadia and Brishen, "I'll be back in a moment, I need to discuss something with this gentleman." He motions the dark bat inside.

The dark bat follows Roho, as bidden.

Roho enters the hospital, and turns right, going into his rather small office. He shuts the door behind him, and offers the bat a seat in front of his desk, "Please… "

Brishen glances worriedly at Roho, then looks up at Arcadia. "I didn't know dragons could get colds." Her nose wrinkles a little at the smoke.

Arcadia hrfmfs… rubbing her nnose with the back of her hand. "I do hope he hurries. I'd hate to sneeze agai."

The dark bat sits down in the chair indicated. "Thank you, Doctor."

Arcadia nods to Brishen ' I don't normally get sick but every once in a while… ' she comments… she smiles softly ' What ever are you here for?'

Roho sits at his desk, "Okay. You're much too official sounding to be buying this for your poor sick aunt, so I'm guessing this is for the Sabaoth. If it is, fine, just say so, it makes no difference to me, and as for his pride, it won't go beyond this door. And we can get to business."

Brishen hobbles in a circle. "I sorta fell off a roof."

Arcadia blinks? " goodness! what were you doing on a roof? " her ears slowly flop down again.

The dark Eeee looks around, then back to Roho. "You guess correctly. The Sabaoth's physicians have been convicted of treason. Those who did not commit suicide were executed for their crimes. The prescription was lost with them, and the samples of your medication were considered suspect as possibly being contaminated by the traitors."

The dark Eeee adds a severe frown. "The entire incident happened in the course of a day. It was not, if I may dare say so without being repeated, a very well-thought-out administration of justice."

Roho nods, "I see. Well, as I am exiled, the politics there make little difference to me any longer. And things always seem to happen very quickly there. I can sell you the medication. Before I do so, may I speak frankly with you about the Sabaoth's condition?"

Roho adds, "You have my word as a doctor that nothing will go past these doors without your consent."

Brishen grins, looking up at the dragon, "I'm always dancing on the rooftops. It's part of my job."

The dark Eeee nods. "Certainly. Speak as freely as you please. My mission is only to obtain the potion. I have no intention of reporting anything further that you do not wish to be said."

Arcadia arches an eyebrow "it is? " she blinks her eyes several times.

Roho nods, "Well, you may wish to report it, though given past experience, it may be wiser not to. You seem nice enough, and it could be a good way to lose your head." He pauses, "I'm fairly certain the Sabaoth is being poisoned. The symptoms point very strongly towards that, especially as the treatment hasn't yet provided a cure. Are there any close to him, who would have regular access to his meals?"

The courier attempts a solemn nod. "Indeed it is. It's part of the contract. Obligatory roof-dancing."

The dark Eeee narrows his eyes. "What you speak of has been whispered in circles. Those who whisper tend to lose their heads. Any who are close enough to the Sabaoth to tamper with his meals are also powerful enough to have any whisperers dealt with."

Arcadia mmmms "Oh. well. I do hope you don't fall again. Id imagine its bad for business. I know this cold is bad for mine ahh ahhh ahh – " she stifles the sneeze with all her might.

Brishen squeaks, wings a-flutter as she tries to scramble out of the way. "Ow! Uf. Er – Please don't sneeze on me."

Roho nods, "I'd guessed that. But there is little I or anyone can do when he keeps himself so high above advice of those that honestly wish to help. Do you wish a supply of the drug, or the directions for preparing it?"

Arcadia's eyes bludge just a bit but at least she doesn't sneeze… she mutters "Dearheart, trust me I'm trying with all I've got not to sneeze on any one." her tail curls about her huge feet.

Brishen tucks a lock of hair under her beret, nodding carefully.

The dark Eeee replies, "A supply of the drug would be best, in as large a quantity as you can manage. You may consider it ironic that the Sabaoth puts more faith in your ability than any of his new physicians. I am trusted to convey the potion to him without tampering."

Arcadia sighs "Its been terrible for my bizness. I've not been able to make any thing for days… and on top of that, I've melted a good bit of my inventory!" She grumbles.

Roho chuckles slightly, "Odd, that he trusts one whom he banished. A banishment which I believe was a mistake on his part, but I have no wish to see him die for it. Come back in three days, and I will have one year's worth of medication for him. I trust you have the means to transport a rather large amount of liquid?"

"Melted?" Bree giggles quietly, "I can't say I've ever had a cold that was quite that dramatic."

The dark Eeee says, "Yes, the means will be provided. I will return in three days. What is your price?"

Arcadia chuckles "Your lucky… "

A brow raises imperceptibly as Bree looks down at her foot. "I don't think lucky applies to me today."

Roho considers that. "Given his wealth, and his treatment of me in the past, I'm not going to extend him the leniency I do to my other patients. Five gold for the year's medication. If he survives until next year, I will prepare another batch then."

Arcadia smirks. and then her eyes get big… WATCHOUT! "ah ah ah ah-ch!" She almost sneezes again… she manages to grab her muzzel and clamp her mouth and nose shut. A few sparks do escape…

Brishen hobbles off to Arcadia's side, and out of range of her rather impressive nose. "I can see where that has caused problems with customers."

Without batting an eye, the dark Eeee replies, "Agreed." He digs inside a vest he wears, and pulls out a cold coin which he puts in Roho's hand. "This is the advance. You will receive four more like it upon delivery."

Arcadia sighs, gagging slightly "You have NOOO idea." She sighs again and just sits down on her haunches.

Brishen inches towards the dragon, tilting her head a little. "How do you make fire?" She grins cheerily, "I've always wondered."

Roho nods, tucking the coin away without bothering to check if it is real gold. "Come back in the morning in three days. And bring a porter, it will likely require two large barrels." He stands, and offers his paw, "I hope you enjoy the sights of Rephidim in the meantime."

Arcadia grins as she chuckles "I eat lots of hot food."

"I beg your pardon," says the dark Eeee as he stands, "but I am afraid I am unable to enjoy the sights. I bid you well, good Doctor."

Roho nods, "Good day." He shows the bat out, and turns to Arcadia, "I'm sorry to keep you waiting… what's the problem?"

Brishen deadpans, "She sets things on fire when she sneezes. Is this normal?"

Arcadia sighs "actually if I remember what my father told me its something about … " she pauses from her explanation to smile at the doctor. " Oh yes. I've got this cold I really need to get rid of it soon… "

Roho nods at Brishen, "Could be worse, I have a friend who blows people across whole towns when she sneezes." He smiles at Arcadia, "Well, I'll be glad to try and help, though I must say my experience with dragons is very… limited. No moreso than anyone else on Rephidim, though." He motions the same rock as Brishen sat on, then grins and reconsiders, "Perhaps it's best if you just be seated where you are."

The little courier crosses her arms, and peers at Roho skeptically. "Across whole towns?"

Arcadia gryns sniffling "Well I don't think I'm that much different from most folk. Well 'cept I do happen to get a bit flamy when I sneeze."

Roho nods at Brishen, as he stands on tiptoes in front of Arcadia so he can reach her throat, "Whole towns… an air mage with bad sinuses." He feels at the dragon's neck, and grins, "Please try not to flame on me while I'm right here, it's bad for the diagnosis."

Arcadia nods a bit, trying not to move. "Would it help if I sunk lower? "

Roho nods, "Actually, quite, if you would… "

"Air mage with bad – Oh! Wynona!" Brishen grins, furling her wings as she settles down to watch.

Roho grins at Brishen, "That's her, yes."

Arcadia sinks down on all fours, curling her legs and arms under her so she gets as low to the ground as she possibly can. Her long neck still craning up a good bit.

Arcadia says, "Hows that"

Roho smiles, "Perfect… " He checks along the dragon's throat, then hmms, "If I asked you to cough, could you do it without spouting flame?"

Arcadia ummmmmms, "I can try… but I don't know. How about I just make sure to turn my head ey? " She smiles slightly

Roho hms, "Well, no, that wouldn't work… okay, I've got a better idea. Open wide, please?"

Arcadia makes a little squeaking noise as she opens WIDE her huge jaws. she tries to talk "Oooiiiay. "

Brishen watches with morbid fascination. "Maybe she has a blocked chimney."

Roho chuckles at Brishen, "Do you know a good sweep?" He hesitates, then pokes his head into the rather gaping maw, "Now, give me the deepest 'Aaaah' you can without setting me on fire… "

Arcadia's sides widen as she breathes in deeply and then rumbles from tail tip to huge belly "Aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" It nearly echos.

Roho listens for a few moments, then hurriedly retreats from the furnace, "Hmm. Okay, I have no idea what the normal temperature is for a dragon, so I'll rely on your judgement… have you felt feverish?"

Brishen covers her eyes. "Oh, I can't look." She does though, peeking out from between her fingers. "What did you see?"

Roho chuckles, "Didn't see anything. But I heard her throat and lungs. And smelled brimstone, too!"

Arcadia shakes her head after closing her mouth and tilting her head side to side, making sure her jaws back in place. "Ahhh no not really… feelin more colddish actually. " She lays her head on the ground as holding up her neck in this position gets rather tiring.

Brishen grins cheerily. "I'd have been really worried if you said you'd seen something."

Roho nods, "Well, hmm. Okay, wait there… " He goes into the hospital, and comes out with a couple bundles of leaves. He hands her the first bundle, "These are to help the chills." He hands the other bundle, "And these are for the sneezing and congestion. Make a tea each morning and night, with one from the chills bundle and two from the congestion bundle. And if you can, try to rest for a few days. Stay covered, drink plenty, don't use your fire if you can at all help it."

Arcadia mmmms with a smile " Okies… thanks!"

Arcadia sits up, "This is great… thank you very much… What do I owe you kind sir? " She gryns.

Roho smiles, "The fee is ten shekels, if you can manage that, or whatever you can muster. And come back if things don't improve within three days."

Arcadia reaches behind her wing and pulls out a tiny pouch… "I believe I can match that… " she dumps a few coins into her hand and hands them to Roho. "Here you go!"

Brishen hmfs, casting a critical eye on her bandaged foot. There's just no way to really disguise it. She hobbles in a circle, and winces. It's going to be a long week.

Roho pockets the coins, "Thank you… " He smiles, "I hope the problem clears up. I'm sure your friends do as well!"

Arcadia nods ' Very much so. She smiles at Brishen… "Do you ed some help getting home? If you like you can ride on my back… "

Brishen spreads her wings, grinning. "Oh, I think I'll have no problem getting home."

Arcadia nods. and waves "Be careful then!"

Arcadia thanks the doctor once more as she too begins to shuffle off, the piles of leaves in her hands.

Roho heads back into the hospital, then wrinkles his nose at the paint smell, and decides to spend just a little longer outside. It's a nice day.
