Rory undergoes another test for Journeyman status, this one involving a dream ritual enacted by the Dream Sisters, Kiz and Kell, and by Mind Mage Aliera Viscoi. In it, Rory experiences a simulation of what life might be like as a Journeyman mage in Rephidim, with his own office. He is put through some situations to test his fitness, including a negotiation with a client over a magical job, a tempting distraction to go do something "fun" rather than to stick to his obligations, an actual carrying out of his job despite opposition from some unknown rival mage … and lastly, an encounter with a Savanite running away from unknown others. Although Rory at first hides the Savanite, supposing him to be a slave running away from "slave rustlers", he finds that the Savanite is being pursued by members of the Caroban Watch who are looking for a "hedge wizard" – a Savanite matching the description of the one Rory is hiding. Rory, despite himself, confesses to hiding the Savanite. The Savanite is captured and taken away, and Rory is praised for doing the right thing.
