After dinner, Envoy takes a moment to contact Morpheus and fill him in on what she's learned. He is at first distrustful of the summons back to Caroban, thinking it might be a trap for Envoy, but she assures him that is unlikely, for political reasons.

She transfers the data from the Svartifin drone that served the spaceship, and in turn gets a glimpse into Morpheus' world, filled with the dreams and hopes of people.

When she returns, Icarus is asleep in her lap and Walter is sleeping on his own. She notices a disturbance in the local magic field, and locates it up in the rafters as possibly being Chaotic in origin. Assuming and Eeee is up there, she whispers to it and invites it down. The intruder turns out to be an Eeee girl apprentice in the Sphere of Chaos, who followed the mail truck out to see if Envoy was the nice person her friends claimed or the dangerous monster that others described her as.

The girl's name is Violette, and half of her seems to be splashed with violet – the result of magically healed burns from when the Boomer fell on Babel, and her family was caught right at the edge of it. The girl was taken in by a Life Mage, and after she was healed was tested and found to have magical aptitude. She came with Latania's expedition as support staff.

Envoy has her examine the 'battery' crystal to see if the girl can sense and make use of magic stored in it, as well as charge it up. She's delighted when it turns out the girl can, since it means any mage should be able to use such a battery. Icarus wakes up during the charging test, as the activity tickled him since the girl's voice was slightly off enough to cause interference with the spell.

Envoy explains that Icarus is a sort of Exile like herself, and is her apprentice. This brings up Envoy's status with the Guild, which really doesn't apply on Abaddon anyway. Violette is invited to stay the night until it's safe for her to leave again.
