Envoy visits the home of the retired Colonel Vesuvius, and argues her case that she should be allowed to examine the laboratory of the mad scientist who created the Leviathan. Vesuvius is resistant, on account of the death of a previous investigator, Pugsley, and his insistence that he hasn't been provided with enough funds to properly investigate the site. Nonetheless, Envoy wins points with Vesuvius' wife, and ends up getting begrudging permission to check out the location. There, she finds a puzzle-trap, which she surmises that she knows the answer to, and risks life and limb in order to prove herself right.
