Her bunny-wrangling duties given to someone else for the day, Miranda is sent into town by her aunt on some errands. The first of these to get some day-old produce for the bunnies. The Lapi arrives at the stall only to find Dieter Wingnut about to purchase the entire lot of it. She quickly interrupts him to ask if she can trade something in exchange for some of the wilted vegetables, and asks what he needs it all for.

Dieter, who is probably the oddest of the Wingnuts, explains that he felt like using vegetable oil on his sprockets today, since he didn't like the smell of fish oil. And of course he'd need ALL of the old vegetables to make it, but if Miranda could suggest an alternative he'd consider it. The Lapi offers up rendered grease or oil made from nuts. The latter piques Dieter's interest, since hammering nuts is more fun than hammering cabbages, so he cancels his purchase and wanders off.

Boris, the Kadie who runs the produce stand, is also a bit relieved and fixes up Miranda's usual order, engaging in small-talk about the bunnies. He adds a few extra carrots for Miranda's own pet rabbit, Cid, who's getting on in years.

The first errand completed, the Lapi heads for the wine shop to purchase some apple wine for the warren. She finds it manned by Curiel Briar Silverfoot, who is chatting with Elsa Kettenrad Wingnut (two Wingnuts in town at once!) about her husband's upcoming 'adventure' with Sylvania Jack.

Miranda orders the wine, and then asks Elsa about Gunther. At first, the middle-aged Kadie assumes Gunther has broken something or gotten into trouble, but Miranda assures her it's about repaying Gunther for helping her to get her tooth fixed. Elsa suggests she arrange for the otter girls, Nene and Bebe to spend some more time with Gunther, but that she be careful to be subtle about it. It isn't good for the men to think they're being helped out or manipulated, even when they are.

The Lapi returns home trying to puzzle out how to be subtle when otters are involved.
