Envoy makes her way from Gateway Island toward the site of the sunken ship Sutaranakh, aboard the Coy Mermaid – a small urgan piloted by Prince-Captain Rashad. Envoy finishes packing, and finds Rashad asleep at the helm, the urgan handling itself well enough and arriving near the Crimson Archipelago. Envoy sees a small Mariner kitten hanging on to the back of the urgan, and when it surfaces, decides to go out for a swim. She witnesses the mer-kitten being flung into the air by a blast from the urgan's blow-hole, landing with a splash in the water and giggling. Envoy greets the kitten, and when the kitten offers to trade "pretty shells", she offers up a song.

Envoy is soon distracted, however, when the urgan starts to swim off, and then she discovers the reason why: a shark-like "devourer" approaches the kitten, and Envoy's timely warning allows the mer-kitten to get out of the way … but then the predator goes after Envoy! Envoy fights for her life, suffering a terrible wound to her leg, but at last manages to get on the creature's back and jab it in the eye, prompting it to throw her off and flee.

Envoy is recovered by the mer-kitten's parents, and brought back to Marinopolis, home of the mer-cats, atop the Great Abyss. Her wound is treated, and she is fed by her hosts, and is allowed a chance to ask them questions about the Sirens and their conflict with the Abyssinian Mariners.
