Baddock, a human boy, is part of a caravan of pilgrims heading along the Pilgrims' Road between Gallis and the Sanctuary of Order – the latter residing on the side of a mountain range just inside the borders of Bosch. As the pilgrims head further into the Forbidden Zone, they pass various morbid and bizarre scenes, as imps try to tempt, taunt or scare the pilgrims into straying from the relative safety of the road – and the wards set upon it to hold the magicks of Bosch at bay. Baddock takes most of it rather in stride, with the energy of youth, and at last makes it to the Sanctuary of Order – a monastery located in an "oasis" of stability in the middle of the wild magic of Bosch.
