Salvatori and Gergesene visit the School of Practical Mechanisms, and search for Talia's son, Jael. They are led through various coridors and labs by Tihbs, a panther that plans to fly. The Principle informs the two that Palace Guards have already come for Jael. The two Korvs fly from the buildings, and intercept them. Jael is very confused and upset by events, and comforted by Salvatori. The guards are not happy that their orders are making them oppose a Landsknecht. The leftennant, Varick, releases Jael to Gergesene's custody on the condition that the knight fulfill their instructions.
