Kia, at her workshop, receives a visit from a large four-armed tiger Khatta, who introduces himself as Kahn, a contender in the Emperor's Challenge … even though the Emperor has passed on, and the Nagai Empire is no more. Kahn has some metal battle gloves that he wishes for Kia to repair, and leaves them in her care.
