In the Kavi village in the Basin, Chiaroscuro goes to speak with Kal, who is recuperating from his ordeal with the "Observer". Kal, despite his condition, declares Chiaroscuro under arrest … though he is in no condition to enforce it … for his killing of the Naga noble in the jungle.

Chairoscuro moves about the village, observing the ways of the Kavi people, and discovers a pit with several Naga prisoners inside. He questions one of the Kavis about what is to be done with the prisoners, and learns that they will be killed during the feast to be held in Chiaroscuro's honor. Chiaroscuro decides it is time to give a speech about the proper conditions under which one should kill snakes.
