Lochinvar, still traveling in search of the migrated village, questions the child, Elevars, about what happened. He learns that this child did not always look as mutated as he does – part Vartan, part reptilian – but rather than some entity known as the "black thing" did it to him, and is in pursuit of the village. Lochinvar gets a sight of the creature, which looks similar to the black blob he encountered on Arcadia, though he spies a crystal disc of some sort either floating on or part of the creature, from the air.
