Inquisitrix Esther, on board the Wayfarer's Song, studies her notes long into the night, and decides to investigate the crystal hands which are supposedly stored in the hold. Instead, she finds the hands gone … and a bomb in its place. An assassin fails in his attack on her, but refuses to give any information as to his motivation. The crew, Esther's underlings discover, is already dead … and there's simply no way to save the ship in the few seconds that remain. Esther is forced to abandon her faithful servants, taking what notes she can, promising to find the ones responsible for this and to avenge their deaths. She escapes using the assassin's parasail, then has to find her way out of Kilmanjar, down the Xenean River, to distant Safar … to secure passage back to Rephidim, unable to rely upon her status as an Inquisitrix … since she does not know whom she may trust anymore
