Envoy and Backhand investigate the "cockpit" portion of the head of a Goliath shell, and determine that the cockpit was once part of some sort of shuttlecraft, but now is reduced to a vestigial state. Backhand notices that Jaffi has wandered out, and they follow him into the saucer. There, they split up, trying to find Jaffi, and Envoy, while looking for him, finds a chamber she didn't notice before, and gets shoved in there while she's looking inside. Jaffi, possessed by some alien entity, operates some machinery in apparently an attempt to try to take over Envoy's body as a more "receptive vessel" for the "whole of his essence", but Envoy makes use of her amazing lung capacity (and ability to shriek like a banshee) and a held "Shape" spell to damage the equipment restraining her, and to break free. She manages to figure out how to unlock the door, then slams it open while the possessed Zerda is on the other side, then applies some acidic goo to his feet, verifying her theory that he has absolutely no threshold for pain, given his "highly evolved" state. The possessed Jaffi and his servant Ari are apprehended, and Envoy tries to figure out what to do with the possessed fennec.
