At the Collegia Esoterica, Qing is in the waiting room outside the office of Dean Faust of the School of the Sphere of Spirit. Aaron, a Lapi shopkeeper, walks in, pursuing a complaint against Qing. Dean Faust has Morticia – his Eeee secretary – send both of them in.

Qing reports what he knows of a "spiritual disturbance", while Aaron approaches it from the direction of wanting reparations from Qing for creating the disturbance in his store. Qing and Aaron argue about who might be responsible – Qing argues that he was merely detecting the presence of a paranormal phenomenon, and that he is not responsible for the actions of a rogue spirit. Aaron argues that Qing prodded the spirit into action, without any regard for other patrons in the store.

The argument is cut short as a storm of magical origins rolls in, and Qing and the Dean both feel a disturbance – from the direction of the Old Cemetery. Qing and the Dean aim to perform a ritual to send a spiritual observer to the scene, while Aaron decides to leave them … and investigate on his own, by foot.

Some time later, the ritual summons forth a magical observer, which looks like a giant eyeball with bat-like wings and withered arms. It is sent forth to the Old Cemetery to investigate. When it gets there, the dark ritual that caused the disturbance has already been completed, but the site is located: a stone altar with the remnants of a magical circle, guttered-out candles, and a stain of blood of a Jupani cub.

The magical observer watches, as Aaron stumbles into the cemetery, and is assaulted by several ghosts … and a fuff'nar. Aaron accidentally fells (with his blowgun) an Eeee guard who comes from the nearby Babelite Embassy to investigate … and he manages to lose a powerful magical staff that he had brought with him – a staff that had been used in another dark ritual by members of the Sixth Kadam in this very same location.

As the observer is summoned back, Dean Faust is convinced of the reality of this malevolent spirit, and declares the charges lifted against Qing.
