Kensington and the Wench of Babel head to Sylvania in search of employment. They see signs of a battle in which the Gallisians apparently lost to a much smaller force. Before Kensington can make much sense of this, a courier airship arrives, and has a box for Kensington from Madame Garrote. It contains … an egg. Kensington hurriedly assigns Rovert, a Khatta crewmember, to sit on the egg, while he deals with a couple of visitors: Jynx and Eve, who saw the airship and decided to investigate. At last, they head on their way to Rephidim, while Kensington ponders over this strange turn of events.
