Shem, Salvatori, Gergesene and Jael are on their way to the Palace in one of its carriages. An obstruction in the road turns out to be an ambush, as a second carriage arrives behind them, blocking their retreat. Gergesene and Shem launch a diversionary attack on the hooded foes, while Salvatori tries to get Jael to safety. Crossbow fire drops Shem and Salvatori, and Gergesene is forced to abandon them to save Jael from a pursuing assassin. The other five hooded figures retreat, taking the fallen, and abandonning the one pursuing Jael. Gergesene battles the assassin in the alleyway, wounding him heavily, and discovering he is personal guard of Baron Phelan. Jael is coaxed from his hiding place, and Gergesene leaves for the Landsknecht Keep, with the boy and the wounded guard in the carriage
