The last wing of the second level of the shaft turns out to be a schoolroom. Zahn collects a few sturdy resin binders that have diagrams in them, while Olivia checks out the podium and discovers a dent in it that was likely made by a head, but no other evidence of foul play.

Past the false walls of the classroom they find a storage area, full of colorful resin boxes and some items covered in fiberglass tarps. The box yield children's drawings, supplies of good paper, ink, craft and drafting supplies, along with a fuzzy sort of wax-backed paper that they can't figure out.

Zahnrad uncovers the first covered item to reveal a sort of inkless typewriter. It doesn't do much on regular paper, but does make an impression of on the wax-backed sort. Next he uncovers an ancient mimeograph machine (although the pair have no idea what it's supposed to do). When Zahn lifts up the rotating drum, it triggers a ghostly scene, where two unseen Skeek children are talking about worrying events, including allusions to a raid by trolls because of some sort of 'blood' that the Skeeks took.

After that creepy episode, Zahn and Olivia haul their loot back to the boat before going further, in case they need to make a fast getaway. On the third level, they find a huge, distorted machine that still seems to be running – or at least making gurgling noises. Zahn finds an access tube and goes to investigate while Olivia keeps outside.

Inside, Zahn comes to the end of the tube to find a jar with the fist-squeezing-stone symbol attached top and bottom into the machine. It's filled with an odd red fluid that seems to be both liquid and crystalline at the same time. And floating in that, hooked up with wires, is a severed Skeek head. It talks to Zahn, and seems to be the head of one of the children whose ghosts they heard upstairs. Zahn calls in Olivia, and they try to question the head (which belonged to a girl named Glim, it turns out).

The head rambles, but reveals that the Guardians turned on the Skeeks, under the control of someone called He Who Hungers, who apparently hungered for heads to be preserved in jars. Glim recognizes Olivia as being the 'Dream Girl', the 'One Who Is Two' and whose other half is waiting at the Bleeding Stone. The stone is apparently in some ancient stone temple inside of an ancient city, and the Skeeks stole the 'blood' from it for He Who Hungers. They were all there because of him in the first place, but Glim can't say more because she sensed 'they' were coming to see what was distracting her from running the machine.

Olivia and Zahn hurry out, with Zahn feeling bad about not being able to help Glim. Once safely back at their boat, Zahn suggests they talk to Buffy about this stuff, so Olivia summons her with the chalk she was given.

Zahn and Olivia share their memories with the guardian spirit. Buffy deduces that the one who is waiting at the Bleeding Stone must be Olivia's own twin sister, who died shortly after birth. The stuff with Clover and Zahn, she thinks, is more to do with this He Who Hungers entity.

Olivia decides to see if she can learn more from Pike's great-uncle Orifice's notes, as Buffy mentions him having talked about "The Philosopher's Stone" which may have been the same red liquid.
