At the Blackrock Hostelry, a Rath'ani cartographer contacts him and offers him a job as a guide on a "Very Secret" project to map the Rephidim Sewers. Piper accepts, and they go down to the sewers. There, Piper encounters a violent sewer denizen, and loses his bow and a shoe in the ensuing struggle, though he manages to escape with his life.
