Inquisitor Zeffel calls Investigator Kani to his office, and gives him some more details on the smuggling case the Keiltyn was working on at the docks. The source of the marked crates has been established as Gran's Lumber Yard. Suspects include a Khatta, a scruffy Jupani, and a goldenvixen. Kani is instructed to try and find hard evidence on the higher ups involved in this. The Investigator dons the disguise of Rilikin, an Artiste providing an intricate interior decoration for one of Rephidim's nobles, that requires just the right kind of used wood. He selects the used crates which Gran's Rhians were in the process of turning into charcoal. Incredulously, Gran lets Kani speak with the employees who do the purchasing of this type of wood. A goldenvixen named Maza latches onto the Keiltyn, and the Investigator is quite pleased about this. Leaving the lumber yard, they go to The Mist Garden, where Maza has a generous lunch at the Temple's expense, and avoids saying anything of great use to Kani. The Keiltyn is distracted both by his luncheon companion, and their Gallee server. There is a brief interuption by one of the other yardworkers, and then Riliken(Kani) takes Maza home. His report to Zeffel states that this matter will require some futher investigation. He also details some of what he managed to get while at the yard, and from Maza. Apparently, he wasn't as distracted as the goldenvixen had hoped.
