Successfully luring the ghost to them, Amelia is able to wrestle it into the bottle while in her demonic form. The timing isn't the best for Zahn, though, so they start over with what they were doing. They then discuss how to interrogate the spirit, with one idea being to have Olivia be possessed by it.

Afterward, it's time to explore the hatch. A tube with ladder slots cut every foot goes down for 300 feet before intersecting a natural tunnel. Zahn finds gouges in the stone floor that could have come from troll claws, and Amelia figures the tunnel runs from under the old Manor House to the ruins in the woods – if it keeps more or less to the same course, since it isn't very straight.

The rhythmic thumping begins, and a warm breeze comes from the direction of the ruins, so the Kadies climb back up the tube a ways and turn off their lamps. Zahn sees two of the big, red-eyed trolls pass, and the second one pauses to look up the tube. Zahn notices it's missing an arm, and guesses it may be the same one that Orifice had captured that left its arm behind.

The follow the trolls and come across a big cavern with tunnels going everywhere, and small trolls all diving into a central hot spring. Two stay back, and carry Zahn and Amelia up to higher tunnels. The big trolls return then, dragging a smaller one behind them that has its claws dug into the floor. Once they pass and the thumping stops, the small trolls reappear and disperse, leaving the Kadies with more questions.
