At the Temple, Envoy tries to arrange a meeting with Bridge Officer Nimiss, but finds that in her prolonged absence, she has slipped from the top of Nimiss's "see list". Nonetheless, she is able to arrange a meeting with Arch-Inquisitor Raphael Melchizedek. She presents a number of reports on interesting news she has come across during her adventures, and also presents Vielanika's troubles as a matter of a request to deal with them. Melchizedek decides to take copies of these reports to Bridge Officer Nimiss, in order to see if their value might be "traded in" for some help with the Audit (over which Nimiss presides). Nimiss is amused by the blatancy of Melchizedek's attempt to circumvent normal procedures, but is intrigued by the content of Envoy's reports, and has his secretary look up some files on the Auditor responsible for Vielanika's predicament. After examining them, Nimiss reveals that he suspects the Auditor in question of "shaking down" certain individuals by hitting them with large fines and channeling them toward disreputable lenders. Nimiss indicates that Vielanika should expect a "personal apology" from the Auditor in question shortly. Envoy, surprised by how well this visit has gone, expresses her gratitude, and then leaves to gather up Rory.
