Aaron, continuing his search for the missing Dragon's Egg, meets with Investigator Herschel again, and they pay another visit to the artisan, Candlegold. Aaron learns that the agent who met with Candlegold was a Jupani, whereas Vanguard – the real lawyer – is a Kujaku. Aaron, realizing that Candlegold is an artist with "a mind for detail", commissions him to make a charcoal portrait of the unknown Jupani, under pretenses of helping him locate the agent to satisfy his curiosity. Herschel is impressed at Aaron's resourcefulness, and takes the portrait to further his investigation.
