Galand, still at his apartment after that little "surprise" with the Scry-Dice and the dagger found stuck into his door (the inside of his door), is visited by Skye, a boldly-colored Vartan who flies him to Faraon's Dome (also known as the Jade Palace) on the flip side of Rephidim. There, Galand is greeted by Nightshade, an Eeee in the service of Faraon the Friend – the dragon who is the real power behind Darkside.

Galand learns that Shadowspite's little game with the threats was designed to alarm the Temple … enough to withdraw some of its guards away from "lesser concerns" than the Captain-Astromancer … such as a Gallisian noble who happened to be killed during this whole episode. Galand is filled with remorse over having been used as a pawn by Shadowspite, and Nightshade makes him an offer: infiltrate the Assassin's Guild, and help to make sure that this sort of thing won't happen again.

Galand is given a place to stay at the Dome in the hidden gardens where the Dreamweed is grown, and he is assigned a Savanite by the name of Digger as his personal attendant while he's there.
