In the city of Dianus in Amazonia, Aaron and Anisa watch the gladiatorial bouts on New Year's Day. In one fight, a rabbit gladiator by the name of Zig-Zig somewhat comically outwits and defeats his opponent – though none the less lethally. More battles follow, and Anisa at last grows weary of so much bloodshed; she asks for leave to step out for "a bit of fresh air," and Aaron joins her. They talk about Amazonia, how different it is from Rephidim, and why Aaron might have chosen to leave his homeland – and Anisa's own homesickness for Rephidim.
