Ambassador Brishen Kara receives a visitor in her office, a Titanian who had been working on the grounds-clearing crew in the graveyard. She is interrupted by a visit from Degarde, who has Envoy and Francisco with him, but Brishen has them wait outside as she interrogates the big lupine worker. After Brishen sends away the Titanian, she sees Francisco, and gives him a necklace to inspect for any presence of magic. When Brishen returns, Envoy has a message for her from Arch-Inquisitor Melchizedek, and Brishen drafts a response.

Later that day, Envoy returns after delivering the message to the Temple, finding Brishen on the wall, watching the site of "Yammerants'" last sighting. Brishen shares some secrets with Envoy. Francisco comes out with his report on the necklace … and Secretary of State Bryanna Kara (Brishen's not-so-liked cousin) drops by as well. Bryanna indicates that the Embassy grounds don't extend as far as Brishen had been led to believe, and that the demolition of the tombstones has been frowned upon by the Temple.
