After a wait that seems to go on forever, Olivia is summoned to the Gnarly Tree. There, in the deep ritual chamber, she prepared for a ritual. She breathes in incense, and gives up some hair and claw scrapings to the cauldron, while Natasha prepares a circle of protection.
The Skeek then has to strip down, and Isolde applies a gooey menthol mixture to all the parts of Olivia that aren't troll-like, which is uncomfortable to say the least! To make it worse, she then has to climb into the cauldron, where more ominous goo is added to make it bubble.
Natasha then raises up the protective barrier, and summons her familiar; a Jadaian dragon. The familiar draws out Olivia's spirit, and begins to dance with it. As the dance goes on, Olivia's memories play out on the smoky curtain of the protection circle, moving backwards as they dance.
A memory shows up that Olivia is surprised to see as a child of around three years old, she ran away from her mother and met a baby troll. Over time, she and the troll would play together, until it finally showed her where it lived but an 'adult' troll chased the young Skeek away. While fleeing, Olivia fell near a river and hit her head on a stone. She remembers being treated by the witches for that, but until now the events leading up to it had been lost.
She is also shown her earliest moments, being cradled by her father while her mother looks out at the funeral pyre of the twin who died.
The ritual ends, and Olivia cleans herself up. Isolde notes how her nightmare fits in with what she had supposedly forgotten and that the troll she saw may have been the same one from her childhood, since the trolls don't appear to age.
While answering some things, the whole experience just raises more questions for Olivia, who decides to see Dr. Pike and find out what she knows about trolls.
