Alptraum isn't sleeping well, and his dreams reflect it. At least until Kaira interrupts one and they relocate to what is probably a psychiatrist's office, with the dragon playing the analyst role while Alptraum sits on the lounge. Alptraum is a bit concerned about how long he has to live, and whether or not the Barsunala spirit attached to him will last long enough for him to finish emptying the dagger of souls. Kaira suggests that more often Alptraum uses the power of the Barsunala, the stronger the bond between them will become thus preventing the spirit from just fading away.
A few long-term goals are discussed, but then they get down to the most immediate challenge ahead: dealing with the sorcerer Dack. Kaira suggests some possibilities involving the Light of Nala, but they depend on Alptraum learning how to channel the power from it. This in turn leads to the idea of getting help from Mave. Alptraum also shows off his Barsunala appearance, and Kaira suggests that people near death would be able to see him like that.
Kaira doesn't trust Mave because "She almost thinks like a dragon." But she agrees that Mave can be useful, especially in learning how to use the Light.
