Francisco, fleeing from the tent of Chiri the healer, after having summoned a demonic being to slay her, makes his way through Darkside. He is wounded from a dagger wound to the gut, and Amaranth encourages him to bolster his health by sapping the life-force of others … so that he will have enough strength to make it to Roho's clinic, about eight city blocks away. Outside the Golden Chance, a gambling hall, Francisco finds his victim – a Zerda sitting on the curb. For a moment, there is a flicker of familiarity, but the vixen's face is obscured in smeared mascara. The Kitsune shoves aside any misgivings, and kisses the Zerda, sucking away her life-force as he heals his wounds. As Francisco tries to hide the body, a party of Zerdas shows up … including Avram the zolk merchant. It soon becomes apparent that Francisco's victim is none other than Rache – Avram's daughter, who had been saved by Francisco from becoming a sacrifice to Amaranth in the Old Cemetery some time earlier. In a twist of irony, she has become his victim instead. "Rache" stirs, and Francisco realizes that Amaranth has transferred herself into the body of the dead vixen. She cries out to Avram for help – using Rache's voice – while Francisco flees into the sewers. There, he hides, and feels sorry for himself.
