Deep within the sewers of Rephidim City, Jynx ekes out a living, having done so for the months since his misadventure in the Old City that trapped him here. He is attacked by one of the sewer's denizens, but makes use of a hand-made spear to deprive the beast of one of its tentacles … which becomes a not-very-tasty lunch for the black Khatta.

His attention goes to some strange lights and sounds across the way, and he approaches to investigate, only to come face to face with what appears to be some strange sort of lamprey-like monster. At last, though he comes to suspect otherwise, but when he returns to investigate more, he gets pulled into the murk. Struggling with his spear, he hits something on the "beast", and gets thrown back … to find that the "beast" is someone in am environmental suit, and that the blunt end of his spear set off some sort of emergency flotation device in the suit.

Jynx aids the suit-wearer, who turns out to be none other than Zsofi, the disagreeable Exile and "Destroyer of Worlds". At about this time, Zsofi's co-workers catch up with her, by boat, and give a ride to the Exile and the black Khatta back to the surface.

Upon coming home, Jynx learns that his bad luck has rewarded him yet again in that his father has rented out his room, supposing him dead (again). But that is not all – the room has been rented to none other than Zsofi! For the time being, Jynx has to share a room with his little sister, Eve.
