Dalton and Lochinvar face off against the shadow creature, which begins to speak – in Nagai. Lochinvar can understand this language, and tries to converse with it, learning that it is the mate of the creature that was slain in the story that Ariecha recounted years ago – and that it is out for vengeance upon the children of those responsible. Lochinvar and Dalton take hits from the tendrils of the creature, but manage to goad it into an unstable position, whereupon Ariecha surprises it from behind, knocking it into the pit. While the wounded and exhausted Vartans try to figure out how to finish off the creature for good, they decide to try to rest up a bit, since they're in no shape to go down to finish it off just yet.
