Lochinvar is brought before Lieutenant do Nell of the Rangers and assigned to a case – to investigate three incidents of attacks upon Rephidim citizens by a "monster" in the sewers. Lochinvar visits the sites, finding some reptilian scales at one site, nothing at the second, but some more scales (slightly different, apparently) at the third site, as well as part of a broken compass.
