Tulani is a Sphynx scout on board the Spring's Bounty, an airship that has run into some engine troubles, and is now docked on a small sky island off the coast of Aeztepa. Tulani is sent inland with Iggy (a typically overactive Kavi) to search for water and vegetation that might help to supplement the airship's supplies while repairs are being worked on. Iggy finds a feline skull near a ruin, which prompts Tulani to react violently, reflexively grabbing him and yanking him away from the remains. (She apologizes, explaining that it's a Sylvanian reaction In Sylvania, they are very wary of mortal remains of the dead.)
They venture in further, finding some sweetvines, bubble berries, and other sky island vegetation that can yield food and water, but the Kavi smells animals. Iggy sets up a net, and Tulani goes into a cave, hoping to flush out what Iggy thinks might be a bunch of chibix. However, she finds that the creatures are actually some sightless, vaguely fish-like creatures. She also finds a small pendant in a crumbling sack, and a scrollcase clutched by a skeletal hand. She takes the pendant, but when she tries to take the scrollcase, the bony hand snaps; the creatures awake and swarm about the cave. It's all that Tulani can do to get out of the cave quickly! Iggy manages to net several of the "flying fish," and slams them against the rocks to subdue them before realizing that they're not chibix after all. Tulani explains what else she found in there, and why it bothers her: in the scrollcase is a map of Sylvania, with several locations marked on it (and not towns!), and there is a pendant that she recognizes as the rune of Necromancy. Tulani at this point is not a happy Sylvanian.
