Leeta is searching for one of the Savanite cubs who hidden in the tower with a stolen cookie. As she looks around, she finds a strange box with a palm print. Pressing her own into it, she is surprised to have it open – after it pricks her finger in some sort of test. Inside are the strange books that only the high Technopriests have; these ones contain Savanite formal sign as writing. Leeta reads, and discovers this was a diary of a Priest of the Silent Ones, from Tahir's time. The hatred, of the other races, and the Silent Ones that relocated to the savan, is surprisingly strong. The passages do contain a few viewpoints that Leeta agrees with, but mostly ones she doesn't. The ancient Priest's wish that the light of the Star burn the blasphemers for their crimes leaves her shaken. A sudden noise prompts her to replace the book and close the box, at which point she discovers it was made by the errant cub. Letting him eat his cookie, Leeta fumes at the unfairness of it all; more than just Tahir and Rhys are aware of the past of the Savanites, and seem quite happy to ignore it.
