Rasheeka is assigned to fill lamps with oil, even though she is too short and too weak to easily accomplish the task. She is slapped several times by her overseer the next day for her failure to perform up to expectations, and Rasheeka's fellow slaves decide to help her with her task, so that she won't get beaten again – something even Shock-of-Light is willing to do, despite her stated dislike for Rasheeka, as Rasheeka is the only one among them capable of communicating with their new masters.
