Immediately after the consultation between Baron Phelan and the Landsknechts, the convalescent Palace Guard, Shem is taken back to the palace. Gergesene and Buran accompany him. Leftennant Varick is puzzled by Shem's presence, saying he thought the guardsman was dead. Gergesene puts in a good word on behalf of the Cervani, then leaves to light a candle for Salvatori. Buran and Shem meanwhile, see the quartermaster, and are assigned rooms. Everyone in the Barracks seems oddly uninterested in Shem's return, and both he and the healer have the sensation of being watched
