After setting up Kalila with Miranda Chalk, Amelia returns to the dam and Zahnrad's workshop. An overly-excited Zahn tells her that because of the damage to the dam, the Clan council decided to let him install his experimental drive system that would compensate for speed changes in the waterwheel from storms and such. He also promises a pleasant night with Amy involving strawberries and grooming.

Amy then goes to see Zahn's cousin, the often ill-tempered Dierdra. To her surprise, Dierdra offers her an honorary membership in the clan, due to the way she risked her life to help Zahn. Amelia accepts (it's too big of an honor to even consider refusing) and thinks about who to choose as her 'guide' and mentor for the first year.
